Production Efficiency Program: Process Evaluation and Impact Evaluability Assessment

This report is an update of a previous process evaluation completed for the Production Efficiency program in early 2004. The Production Efficiency Program uses a wide variety of efficiency strategies for industrial processes to acquire large volumes of electric savings. The report finds that the Production Efficiency program is successful from a number of perspectives. It has conducted a large number of projects with a variety of industrial firms and is acquiring large quantities of cost-effective energy savings. Industrial participants are happy with the program, especially with the services they receive from program staff. The report offers specific conclusions on research issues raised by Energy Trust staff.

Market Progress Evaluation Report: SAV-AIR, No. 4

This is the fourth out of five reports evaluating SAV-AIR. The SAV-AIR Market Transformation Initiative (Initiative) was undertaken to change the way compressed air end-users and service providers view and manage their systems. SAV-AIR provides comprehensive compressed air management systems and engineering services. SAV-AIR has the expertise and specialized technology to evaluate existing equipment and engineer upgrades, and to provide ongoing monitoring and control of an entire compressed air system for large industrial customers. Their advanced monitoring and control system is called the PL2000. They have also recently developed and tested a simpler control system, the PL1000. Because the SAV-AIR system is fairly high-tech and relatively expensive, it is being adopted by customers with larger systems. Findings from the report include: SAV-AIR has completed ten monitoring and control installations (with the PL2000 product); SAV-AIR is part of a significant increase in the sales of high-end compressed air controls; SAV-AIR had completed all six of the required regional “beta” demonstration sites and associated case studies; for the first eleven fully operational control projects, the average compressed air energy savings were 35%; No other compressed air monitoring and control companies have entered the regional market; SAV-AIR is close to break-even but is not self-sustaining; no ongoing services contracts have been sold; use of the PL2000 controls interface and system-monitoring information is uneven; and slow sales. Recommendations are listed in the report.

Market Progress Evaluation Report: Evaporator Fan VFD Initiative, No. 3

This is the third and final evaluation report for the Evaporator Fan Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Initiative, the activities of which were intended to make variable frequency drives an industry standard for evaporator fans in refrigerated warehouses in the Northwest, and to overcome concerns about VFD reliability and fan motor failure, variation in warehouse temperatures, electrical harmonics and fruit quality. The overall goal of the initiative is to demonstrate energy efficiency benefits and also non-energy advantages such as positive impacts on product quality. The target markets were controlled atmosphere storage warehouses and cold storage warehouses. The objectives of the report include reviewing the status of the Initiative and reporting observations on its activities; evaluating the level of market acceptance of VFD technology for evaporator fans, the energy savings, and other benefits; and identifying any remaining issues and making recommendations. The report concludes that the Initiative was an overall success in allaying concerns about the use of VFDs for evaporator fans.
